Let’s Go on a Colour Safari!

,

Colour Hunting for the Kids!

Enjoy interactive nature walks with your little ones with this colour hunting activity! Kick up your child’s observation skills while helping them connect with nature.  Parents – even you may be surprised with the vast number of colours you can find! Try having a close look at the bark on a dead tree, in the leaf litter, rocks, house plants and more!

During this time of social isolation, you may not be able to use public trails or parks.  If you have a garden or backyard, you can go outside and find colours there.  If you can’t be outside, have your little ones find colours in your cupboards, on paintings or furniture.

You can use the  Nature Inspired Colour Safari Activity Page provided (the colours were “borrowed” from lichens, stones, leaves, mushrooms, grass, tree sap, and berries) or make your own with crayons or ready made colour chips from a hardware store.

  • To use the ready made colour sheet, print off the attached PDF, preferably on thick paper.
  • Help your kids cut out the dotted squares to make little windows. We found that a utility knife worked best.
  • If you don’t have thick paper, you can glue your sheet onto a piece of cardboard that has been cut to the same size, then trace the windows onto the cardboard and cut the windows out of the cardboard too.
  • If you have a clear plastic sleeve, put the finished colour matching page in it to keep it clean and dry.
  • If you prefer to make your own colour sheet, you can print off the Make Your Own Colours page.  Have your kids colour in the boxes with solid lines with crayons, felt markers or paint.  You can even glue on paint chips from a paint store.
