DESCRIPTION:Nature’s Exposed at the Moth Ball!\n📅 Thursday\, July 16 2026 | 🕡 3:00 PM – 1:00 AM\n📍 Pembina Nordic Centre\, 7010 Twp 494\, Eagle Point Provincial Park\n🎟 FREE Family-Friendly Event \nThe Eagle Point Moth Ball Returns on July 16\, 2026\nGet ready for an evening under the stars as we shine a light (literally!) on some of Alberta’s most fascinating nocturnal creatures. From live bats and snakes to moths and frogs\, the Eagle Point Moth Ball is a celebration of the creatures that come alive when the sun goes down. Not only is this a fun\, educational event\, but we document all species of moths that visit our light sheets and record that information on the iNaturalist Eagle Point Butterfly and Moth Project.  This year\, we’re adding two afternoon sessions – a bug safari for families and a mushroom presentation for mushroom enthusiasts!  We will have food trucks on site this year as well! \nWhat You’ll Experience:\nAfternoon adventures – Bug Safari and Marvellous Mushrooms presentation \nLive Presentations – Get up close with expert presenters and meet some of their real-life creature companions! This year’s lineup includes: \n\nAlberta Lepidopterists’ Guild – Learn about this group of moth and butterfly enthusiasts and their important work across the province. They will also be the folks helping you ID months that end up in the live moth traps along the Pembina Nordic Trails.\nAlberta Community Bats – Discover what bat life is all about for Hoary Bats\, and meet Batsby\, a 4-year-old Hoary Bat (health permitting). Fun fact: Did you know Hoary Bats are the only bat species known to have made it to Hawaii on their own?\nAlberta Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy (AARC) – Say hello to a LIVE tiger salamander\, a wood frog\, and maybe even a garter snake! Learn about Alberta’s native herptiles and how these rescued animals came to be part of the AARC family. Fun fact: Did you know that Wood frogs can survive being frozen solid?!\nEdmonton and Area Land Trust\nNative Bee Council\nAlberta Parks\nEagle Point-Blue Rapids Parks Council\n\nPlease note registration is required for these presentations due to limited space.  \nAfter-Dark Adventures – As the sun sets\, the fun continues! \n\nCampfire & Marshmallows\nMoth Light Sheets – Ever wonder how scientists study moths? Moths are attracted to certain wavelengths of light.  Alberta Lepidopterists’ Guild will have several different moth lights set up\, using various light sources.  At each light\, there will be a white sheet where the moths land so that we can get a close look at the diversity in size\, colour\, pattern and movement of these amazing creatures.\nBat Walks and Night Creature Walks from 10:15 PM – 11:00 PM and 11:05 PM – 11:50 PM (registration required)\n\nFull Event Schedule\n\n3:00pm to 4:00pm – Bug Safari with Native Bee Council and Alberta Lepidopterists Guild (registration required)\n4:00 to 5:30 pm – Marvellous Mushrooms: Learn your edible mushrooms with Alberta Parks (registration required)\n7:00 pm to 8:30 pm – Guest Speakers/Meet the Creature (registration required)\n8:45 pm to 9:15 pm – Moth Trap Reveal with EPBR and Alberta Lepidopterists Guild\n9:45 pm – Moth Lights Turned On! Self Guided – grab a map to find the lights\n10:15 to 11:00pm – Bat Walk & Night Creatures Walks (registration required)\n11:15 to 11:59 pm – Bat Walk & Night Creatures Walks (registration required)\n\nAt the Rustic Chalet \n\n9:00 pm – Campfire & Marshmallows\n\nOn Trails and Near OEC \n\n9:45 pm – 1:00 am – Moth Lights Turned On – Maps Provided\n\nBats Walks meet at the trailhead sign near the Rustic Chalet\, Night Creature Tours meet at the Disc Golf Map just west of the Outdoor Education Centre entrance.
