Global Big Day 2023

May 14, 2023

We’re celebrating International Migratory Bird Day once again this year, by joining birders from across the globe to count birds!

Please note that an out of control wildfire has directly impacted many of our birding areas.  You can still count from your home/neighbourhood if you are not in the evacuation zone and are outside the road blocks.  We will do a modified bird tour if safe to do so.  Register to receive an updated bird tour location map, which will be issued on Friday, May 12.

Register here or contact Kathy at outreach@epbrparkscouncil.org or 780-542-1932.

If you love the outdoors and want to help with our annual bird count, we are eager to enlist you to join the Eagle Point team this year!

Register here or contact Kathy at outreach@epbrparkscouncil.org or 780-542-1932.

Our bird count is part of a huge citizen science project that collects data to help scientists better understand birds, migration patterns, birds at risk and more.

We’ve been participating in Global Big Day since 2018.  This year will be our 6th bird count!  Our record specGlobal Big Day Birding Checklisties count is 90 from 2020!  In 2022, we came very close to matching our first year’s count with 89 species!  Last year, our coolest bird was a Wilson’s Phalarope, seen in a tiny pond on our way to Buck Lake.

How to Participate:

  • Count from your backyard or neighbourhood (within 60 km of Drayton Valley) OR join us on the Bird Tour.
  • Count for as little as 5 minutes or as long as 24 hours (if you dare)!
  • Identify each species (and the number of birds/species) at each location that you count at.
  • Submit your final count/checklists

How to Submit Your Count or Checklists

There are two ways to submit your bird count/checklists:

    1. If you use eBird, share your checklists to Eagle Point. (The eBird app is free and easy to use).
    2. Send us an email with the locations (street address or longitude/latitude), and the number and species at each location to outreach@epbrparkscouncil by May 14, 2023 (noon at the latest please).
    3. Use our Checklist and send it to Kathy by May 14, 2023 (noon at the latest please).

Bird Tour (self-drive)

Due to an out of control fire that impacts Eagle Point Provincial Park, Blue Rapids Provincial Recreation Area and the town of Drayton Valley, our Global Big Day 2023 Bird Tour will be changed.  As the situation is updated, we will message all registered Global Big Day tour participants directly.  Currently, Buck Lake Prov. Recreation Area is the only original stop that we can still do safely.

Let us know that you are participating!

Register here or contact Kathy at outreach@epbrparkscouncil.org or 780-542-1932.
